The Global Game is an online platform created by Het Nieuwe Instituut (HNI), the Artistic Director for London Design Biennale 2023 (LDB23). The aim of the Game is to facilitate and extend international and cross-sector collaboration and exchange amongst participating designers, makers, thinkers and cultural leaders, leading up to, during and after the Biennale.

All confirmed LDB23 exhibitors and their partners can play The Global Game. If you are officially partnering with others who are not already in The Global Game, please let London Design Biennale know and a separate profile for your partner(s) can be created if appropriate. Participants can receive a link to play The Global Game as soon as their participation is confirmed.

London Design Biennale will provide each exhibitor team with a link to set up their project profile. Multiple members of the same team can play The Global Game at once or separately to add project updates, as well as browse the profiles of other exhibitors, create new collaborations and request to join existing ones. We recommend you use a desktop computer with Chrome browser for an optimal experience. Playing The Global Game is not a replacement for communicating with the LDB23 team. All key project updates, questions and feedback must be managed by speaking directly with the LDB23 Project Team. Please ensure that any significant amendments or proposed changes to your project brought about by the Game (or otherwise) are discussed with the Project Team as early as possible.

LDB exhibitors are invited to play The Global Game to facilitate and spur new collaborations between participants, to create an LDB23 community and to have fun exploring ideas and projects. Exhibitors can share their own and explore others’ curatorial themes, research methodologies and project ambitions to work together and collaborate on a global scale through design. These collaborations can be realised before, during or even after LDB23. In June 2023, exhibitor teams with the most points earned through playing The Global Game will be awarded a Special Commendation alongside LDB Medal Winners.

Yes! The Global Game allows you to register already existing collaborations and earn points relating to those collaborations. It provides the opportunity to build on existing collaborations and for others to link with you.

The Beta version of The Global Game will be played by confirmed LDB23 exhibiting teams and their approved partners only. In early 2023, the public will be invited to participate in the Game as ‘Explorers’ and will be able to view exhibitor player profiles and collaborations.

If you have a technical or general question about The Global Game you can send a message to us through the Help Desk on the Game’s menu page.

You can register an existing collaboration or propose new collaborations by using the ‘Register a Collaboration’ or ‘Seek Partner’ forms within The Global Game. Once you have filled in the details of your collaboration, your form will be sent to HNI, the Artistic Director, for review and approval. If the collaboration is approved, it will go live on the Game for other players to view and/or join. The Artistic Director and LDB will strive to facilitate all proposed collaborations. However, when collaborations are not feasible for LDB23 due to technical or curatorial reasons, feedback will be provided to exhibitors.
